May 28, 2021 Biden Budget Omits Hyde Amendment

As expected, the Biden administration has proposed a 2022 budget without including the Hyde Amendment, which has been attached to every budget since going into effect in 1980. Prior to this time, about 300,000 abortions were done annually using taxpayer money.

The Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of federal funds for abortions except in cases of incest or rape and when the mother’s life is in danger. Biden has stated that he wants to do away with the amendment in order to expand access to abortion at taxpayer expense. Currently, the amendment is not attached, but it can be added as the bill goes through Congress.
